Project #7 - Making PomPoms

I always produced pompoms the cardboard-donut way.
It's okay, but it gets harder the smaller the hole in the middle gets, and unless you have a pompom maker you always have to destroy your donut to get the finished pompom out.

Some time ago I found this way easier pompom tutorial on the Smile And Wave blog and here and here.

And I thought about giving it a try and did it!

Here is my tutorial:

You need cardboard, yarn and scissors.

Start by cutting your cardboard. Mine was about 4cm wide, the wider your cardboard is the bigger your pompom will be.

Cut a slit into your cardboard piece, about as deep as your piece is wide, and put a string of yarn in.

Now the pompom making starts.

Wrapp the yarn around the catd board. Wrap and wrap and wrap. See my pictures for directions and how much wrapping I did.

When you think your pompom is big enough, tie a knot with the string you placed in the slit. Tie it really really tight.

Start cutting through the loops and your pompom will open and start like looking like a pompom.
As soon as you have cut enough loops open you can remove the cardboard.
(I did another tight knot after removing the cardboard, you will see if you need this or if you did it tied enough before)

Give your pompom a little trim to get a nice round ball.

Now use your pompom for beanies, wreaths, and and and...
